Deià, Mallorca, Spain

Belmond La Residencia

Perched between the jagged Tramuntana mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, La Residencia is more than a hotel—it is a village within a village. Comprising two manor houses dating back to the 16th century, this honey-hued sanctuary in Deià is a masterclass in rustic elegance and creative heritage. With one of Europe’s largest permanent sculpture gardens and a resident curator, it remains the ultimate refuge for those seeking the "slow life" amidst olive groves, citrus trees, and world-class art.

Hotel Guide

Facilities

  • The 71 rooms and suites are spread across the estate, each uniquely decorated with local antiques and original artworks.

    • The Suite 67: For the design-obsessed, the suite reimagined by Matthew Williamson is a must—a vibrant explosion of botanical prints and hand-carved furniture that mirrors the colorful spirit of Deià.

    • The Villas: For ultimate privacy, the property offers a three-bedroom villa with its own pool, perfect for long-stay residents.

    • Art & Culture: Explore the Sa Vinyeta sculpture garden or join the resident painter or sculptor in their on-site studios. The hotel’s own art gallery features rotating exhibitions from local and international masters.

Wine & Dine

  • El Olivo: Housed in a 17th-century olive press, this is one of Mallorca's most romantic and celebrated restaurants. Expect sophisticated Mediterranean flavors under the direction of Chef Guillermo Méndez.

  • Café Miró: A tribute to the artist who loved this island. Dine on the terrace surrounded by 33 original Miró works, enjoying tapas and cocktails as the sun sets over the valley.

  • Tramuntana Grill: Perfect for a long, lazy lunch of grilled lobster or local lamb by the pool.

Wellness & Spa

  • The award-winning spa is a sanctuary of Mallorcan ingredients. Treatments utilize local olive oil, lemons, and almonds.

    • The View: Relax in the indoor pool or the outdoor hot tub, both offering panoramic views of the mountains.

    • Movement: Complimentary yoga classes are held on the terrace at sunrise, and two grass tennis courts (frequented by world-class pros) are available for guests.

Local Guide

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

  • Cala Deià: Don’t take a car; follow the ancient stone path (Camí de Baix) that winds through olive groves from the hotel down to the sea. It’s a 20-minute descent that smells of wild rosemary.

  • Robert Graves’ House (Ca n’Alluny): The poet and author of I, Claudius is the reason Deià became an artist's colony. His home is preserved exactly as it was, providing a hauntingly beautiful look at 1930s bohemian Mallorca.

  • The Parish Cemetery: It sounds somber, but it is one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Located at the very top of the village, it is where Graves is buried. The views of the sunset from here are unparalleled.

  • Valldemossa (15 mins): Visit the Real Cartuja, where Chopin and George Sand spent a winter. Afterward, stop at Pastelería Ca'n Molinas for a coca de patata (potato bun)—a local rite of passage.

Where to Eat

  • Everybody loves Ca’s Petro March on Cala Deia, but we prefer Sa Foradada nearby. You can either reach this spot by boat or by taking a beautiful 45-minute hike down from the car park — either way, swim in the glorious glassy waters in the cove before lunch. Here, it is all about the paella and Mallorcan white wines.

  • Nama is a beautifully designed South East Asian restaurant with one of Deia’s loveliest terraces overlooking the Tramuntana mountains. Order the seafood noodles and crispy duck salad.

  • Whether you sit in the romantic restaurant with its flickering candlelight or on the pretty terrace, Sebastian is a timeless delight. Run by the chef Sebastian and his wife Patricia, it focuses on seasonal dishes, using ingredients fresh from the market and local wines.

Where to Shop

  • Gres Deià: For minimalist, earth-toned ceramics that perfectly capture the Tramuntana aesthetic.

  • Obscura Deià: A curated concept store by Stephen and Jeannie—expect rare fragrances, local textiles, and curiosities that you won’t find elsewhere on the island.

  • Deià Shop: The go-to for high-end Mediterranean linens and the quintessential Mallorcan basket bag.

How to Get There

  • By air: Palma airport is about 45 minutes away, and renting a car is recommended for travel to the hotel, allowing for seamless exploration of the island's hidden corners.

  • Direct from NYC: United Airlines now offers a direct seasonal flight from Newark (EWR) to Palma, making the hop from the US easier than ever.

  • The Tip: Book a private transfer for the 45-minute drive. The road into Deià is famously winding and spectacular—best enjoyed while someone else handles the hairpin turns.
